During the Women in da Vinci Surgery Symposium, we asked doctors what inspired them to join a community of female surgeons and pulmonologists. On the support they found and the connections they made, in their own words: “Sisterhood. I’m learning from these women and how they navigated challenging situations. My husband's an interventional radiologist. He's a male. He’s 6’2” and has a different presence than I have as a 5’2” female with big bushy hair. I can talk to him, but I feel like I could connect on this level and get more meaningful advice from some of these women. I truly see it being a sisterhood with the women I've met here today.”—Samantha Baah, MD,FCCP “Being able to grow my relationships within this community helps make the whole world of surgery much more friendly. It allows me to constantly challenge myself and to reach out to others and to share experiences. It just makes my practice that much better, stronger, and more rewarding.” —Seung Gwon, M.D., F.A.C.S. “What motivates me to work through challenges is my daughter, who is almost three years old. It’s terrifying and saddening to me that when she grows up, she might not get great gynecological care. If there’s a single thing I can do to make that not be the case—sharing a social post, a video, a proctorship, a talk at a conference, anything—I would do anything on this planet if it means her getting better care.” —Olga Muldoon, MD
“Pride Month is a time to celebrate and honor the courage of those who came before us,” says Kristofer O'Brien, director, Leadership Development and co-chair of PRIDE at Intuitive, our Employee Resource Group for LGBTQ+ employees and allies. “It's a time to remember the Stonewall riots and the activists who fought for LGBTQ+ rights. It’s also about creating a supportive and safe path forward for all members of the community—a time to come together and show solidarity, love, and acceptance for all.” This Pride Month, Intuitive is honored to celebrate our LGBTQ+ employees around the world. "This is certainly time to acknowledge and appreciate how far our community has come and find ways to celebrate that," says Jackson Sugg, Commercial Learning manager, Ion and PRIDE co-chair. “But it’s also a time to remind myself how far I personally have come with the help of my friends, family, and community. There was a time in my life where it was extremely hard for me to simply say the word ‘gay’ because of the teasing and fear I lived with for so long. Pride for me is knowing I’ve now found a voice and want to help any others struggling to find theirs as well. I am so glad to be proud not only this month, but all year round.” As we commemorate Pride Month, we join members of PRIDE and employees across the company as we honor the past, celebrate progress, and recommit ourselves to championing a diverse and inclusive Intuitive where everyone can thrive.

Intuitive is incredibly proud to celebrate Memorial Day and Military Appreciation Month. As we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice, we express our gratitude and admiration for those who have served our country. We’re especially proud of the members of VETS, our Employee Resource Group that supports and provides an essential community for military veterans and allies across the company. We asked members of VETS to reflect on what Memorial Day means to them. Josh Michael, VETS Development Lead and da Vinci clinical sales associate, says: “It’s a day where the entire country gets to stop and honor and cherish my friends and other veterans’ friends that have paid the ultimate sacrifice for us to celebrate the freedoms we have today.” “When I think about Memorial Day,” says William Cambardella, VETS Co-Chair and Federal Government relations lead, “I remember that we are standing on the shoulders of giants.” What does Memorial Day mean to you? #WeAreIntuitive

Born in the Philippines, Hazel immigrated to the United States in elementary school, where she quickly learned the feeling of being different. “I wanted so much to belong,” she says. Hazel did everything she could to fit into her new American life—but something was lost along the way. Over the years, as she became a mom of two, Hazel has found her voice, and she's proud of where she comes from. “I tell my kids ‘Be kind to yourself, be kind to others, and you’ll be OK.’ And I think that’s true for everybody. When does your work become more than a job? For many of us at Intuitive, it’s the moment that we or someone we love needs minimally invasive care—when the impact we hope to make on patients around the world reaches our own lives. For Clinical Sales Manager Sascha Gerber, that moment came when his wife Kelsey had a mass in her chest that threatened her heart. She needed da Vinci surgery to remove it. After a successful procedure, Kelsey was able to get back to life: exploring North Carolina with their three children. Sascha—who has spent more than a decade working with surgeons to bring da Vinci technology to patients—felt a new sense of pride and gratitude for the work he does every day. “Being on the other side of it as a family member of a patient gave me a whole new perspective of what we do here at Intuitive,” Sascha says. “My belief in what we do for surgeons and patients has been invigorated.” Sascha has dedicated himself to others since the beginning of his career. He joined the U.S. Army to “fulfill a family legacy and give back to the people of this country.” Serving in the Medical Service Corp., he became a detachment commander and oversaw medical evacuations of 3 helicopters and 25 soldiers in Afghanistan. “Everyone came home,” he says. “It was a tremendous accomplishment.” Like so many of us, for Sascha working at Intuitive is an opportunity to be part of a company that makes a real difference in people’s lives.
