Pros
Two things - people and potential. The people who work at Cummins are some of the greatest folks that you'll ever meet. They (highly) value their personal time - including time with their family and friends - and they treat work as important but not THE most important thing in their lives. The potential for this company is huge - not only from a financial growth perspective but also from a process improvement perspective. When given the opportunity and management buy-in to improve something, the results are awe-inspiring.
Kontras
IT is backwards. Much of the work is outsourced to vendors who can't code, can't speak English, and have no understanding of the fundamentals of end to end programming. In addition, there is an internal shared services group for infrastructure which cares more about how to eak money out of the business then in actually delivering and sustaining systems. Personnel doesn't have their act together either. There's a lack of coordination for bringing on new people. It's like once they are hired, people forget that they need the basics to do their job. Six sigma is something that many folks are supposed to do but in many cases, it's not true to what the discipline is. While there are ways to improve things through a six sigma process, not everything fits into that structure yet, if it is labeled potentially cost saving, it will be shoved into that structure.
