      Vorstellungsgespräch

Simple interview followed by a mock instruction with a current tutor. The mock instruction is really laid back, and the problems (math) were not difficult. The tutor who interviews you will give you lots of helpful information.

The tutoring simulation is so poorly designed that I have a hard time believing that it results in anything close to an optimal selection of talent. There are so many bewildering aspects to the process. Why am I interviewing with a woman with screaming children on her lap? Why is the person (a fellow tutor) in charge of evaluating my candidacy located in my target market (hello conflict of interest!)? I get the sense that this company is run by pedants.

There's no structure to the interview. It's essentially a free-for-all.

I came here and viewed the analytics before my interview to see that the company has SOLELY hired white, straight, men. Then I find out interviews are done by senior tutors. Well, this tutor in particular is over 65 years old. The interview agreement was that I needed to prove I could get a 650 on the SAT. I passed all interview questions except for one. Then the interviewer went off script and started giving me more questions that he just made up. I knew these were some of the most difficult SAT questions. I got halfway through it but apparently not fast enough (in two minutes). It was a quadratic equation--which he seemed to penalize me heavily for not knowing the quadratic equation by heart. Which, I happen to know is off script based on ALL these reviews and more. He would have kept throwing questions at me until he decided he'd done enough to disqualify me because he decided at the beginning of the interview that he wasn't hiring me for whatever superficial reason. He may be a good tutor, I wouldn't know. But he is terrible at interviewing, because anyone knows that you look for raw intelligence and ability to do the task in the interview and skills can be taught. I am DISGUSTINGLY overqualified for this role and so it felt like he gave me some kind of "heightened test" and when I didn't measure up to his new ad hoc standards he dinged me. High performing people don't appreciate being held to unreasonable standards and then penalized for not being a superhuman genius. Get over yourself. FIFTEEN DOLLARS AN HOUR PEOPLE.

      Frage 1

What is the quadratic equation? Solve a quadratic equation. Do algebra. Do geometry. Do English. Do reading. And if they don't want to hire you for whatever dumb reason, they'll just make stuff up.

Thank you for sharing this feedback. We strive to provide candidates with a professional, efficient, and effective application and interview process. I am sorry to hear your experience with the interview process was not better. I want to respond to a couple of the concerns you noted: 1) We take pride in being an equal opportunity employer and have a fantastic team of tutors with diverse backgrounds, identities, and experiences. You can view the profiles of our tutors on our PrepNow website (StudyPoint’s online tutoring brand) - http://prepnow.com/our-tutoring-staff/ and 2) The families we work with understandably have very high expectations of their tutors, so part of our interview process is ensuring that candidates have a high level of knowledge and comfort with the material that the SAT and ACT cover. The math, especially, can be tricky since many candidates do not use those types of math concepts in their daily lives and careers and may not have studied those concepts since they took those courses themselves. Candidates who may need to do a lot of review or brushing up on material before starting to work with students may not be a good fit for this role. In situations where candidates struggle to explain one or more of the standard interview questions that are provided ahead of time, interviewers may ask follow up questions to get a better sense of their comfort with the material. Additionally, since there are times when tutoring that a tutor and their student will need to work through practice items the tutor has not seen previously, this approach also mimics the actual tutoring dynamic. All of that being said, we want the application and interview process to be a positive experience for candidates. Since it was not for you, that means we can continue to work on making it better. I will share your feedback with our team so we can take it into consideration for future changes. Best, Kristen Lefebvre National Director of Education
