Vorstellungsgespräch für eine Beschäftigung als Sales Representative

      19. Juni 2017
      Anonymer Bewerber im Vorstellungsgespräch
      London, England

      Positive Erfahrung
      Schweres Gespräch

      Bewerbung

Ich habe mich auf Empfehlung eines Mitarbeiters beworben. Der Vorgang dauerte 3 Wochen. Vorstellungsgespräch absolviert im Juni 2017 bei Stack Overflow (London, England)

      Vorstellungsgespräch

I applied through an employee referral, and the whole interview took about 3 weeks and consisted of 7 stages - 1 with recruiter, then a sales director, then EMEA sales manager, then a lunch with the team, the regional sales director in the US, following a personality assessment online and finally an interview with the founder. The overall interview experience was very positive, everybody I met along the way was very nice and easy to get a long with. The recruiter, Mary, was lovely and helpful and prepared me well for the interviews. Since I'm based in Ireland, I had the first 2 interviews over the phone and Skype (each 30mins-1hr). Then flew over to London and had a 3rd in person interview (another hour) and then had a lunch with the team (3 people, 1 hour). Everybody seemed nice, helpful and friendly, and I got through to the next round. Then I had one more interview over Skype with a regional sales director in NYC, who was substituting for the other director who normally conducts these interviews, and while an interview was supposed to be competency based questions such as what motivates you? ethical selling, first few weeks on the job and greatest skills as a sales person - an interviewer failed me because my answers weren't concrete enough, I didn't give specific sales flow examples and he couldn't connect with me, so I got a no at that stage. The sad thing is, that after having spent so much time preparing for other 3 interviews, it all seemed not relevant anymore due to the last one. So overall, positive interview until the very last part, where a disconnect with 1 interviewer lead me to not getting a job. If the 1 interviewer from NYC decides everything, and the other ones have no say, perhaps it would make sense to either do that interview first, or combine it with the on-site interview?

Step 1: Pass phone screener. You will be questioned heavily about the contents of your resume -- be prepared to explain in GREAT detail. Step 2: Arrive to their office in business casual AKA wear a suit. Their interview process is EXTENSIVE and at times, demeaning. Why? Because it works! If you progress to the team portion of the interview (after taking a series of tests*), you will meet with all levels of employees with different interview styles and personalities, so it's important to be prepared on multiple levels (or else the interview will immediately stop and you will be asked to leave). If you're fortunate, then you'll be asked about your understanding of their various products (Stack Overflow, Stack Overflow Careers, Stack Exchange). The more you know about those various products (again, should you be allowed to discuss that) the more likely you will be set up for success. * They require a testing portion for all Sales candidates during the interview process. The test consists of three parts all taken in a private room on a computer: • First, a 20 minute, 40 question basic math and grammar portion (easy). You may use a calculator for this, which we provide. Timing is key and there are a series of reading comprehension questions at the end of the test so please space out your time. We require a minimum score on this as we have found our successful sales employees score relatively well in comparison to other sales teams out there. (I passed) • Next, a 20 minute sales aptitude personality test. This is to determine if your personality fits the trends of other successful sales professionals. (I passed) • Finally, a written portion where we ask you to formulate a mock-email to a potential client. We really just want to determine how your basic writing skills are since so much of our work is done over email. (I passed) After I passed the exams, I had lunch with three others who currently held the position of interest. We talked about the company, my interest in the position and general plans. They were pleasant and non-intrusive. The key there was to remember their names.** If all three of the sales representatives like you (and by like you, not one of them can be on the fence, that's an automatic no and the interview will end there) then you will advance to meeting someone higher up in the company. Initially, I was told that I was to meet with the Person #1 in a position that I can't mention, Person #2 in a position that I can't mention and finally, Person #3 in a position that I can't mention. Without explanation, I met with the Person #3 straightaway (via Google Hangouts). He asked me some questions about my previous place of employment, which I accordingly answered. He then asked me to name the three people that I had lunch with at the office** first and last. I could only remembered partial information, and he said that I "failed" and that the interview was over. He was quite condescending. I asked him if he knew their names and he did not respond. He didn't believe that I would have been able to successfully perform the job of sales representative because I couldn't remember the first and last names of all of the sales reps that I had lunch with an hour or so beforehand. He thanked me for coming in and wished me luck on my job search. He closed the hangout and that was that. No one came to collect me and I gathered my things and quietly left the office.

There are multiple stages to the interview process. The company is looking for both skilled sales reps and sales reps who would do well in the environment. I had a 1:1 with the Sales Manager, a 1:1 with a Team Leader, and a group lunch with other sales reps. The group lunch was really helpful as I was able to get a good idea of the co-workers and sales environment. I took tests for basic math, basic English, and a personality test. Then, there are interviews with higher ups in the company. It takes a few days to schedule all the interviews. I had a positive experience.
