Many different illnesses can cause shortness of breath and lung problems. Pulmonary Rehabilitation services team members work out a unique plan for every patient. Megan Sharpe, a respiratory therapist at IU Health West, is one such team member. “We want to educate on medications, on different breathing techniques to help and different triggers that may cause shortness of breath. Then, we want to get [our patients] to exercise. We know that once we can get them comfortable and we can get them doing light to moderate exercise, it helps build muscle, strengthen their heart and then, in turn, will help with their lungs,” Sharpe explains. Sharpe has been working at IU Health West for 12 years, but each day is different. Most often, she works with other rehabilitation team members to provide care plans for patients. “The patients get to know our program, and then we'll devise a plan that's going to work best for them. I focus a lot on education during those initial visits. We have a nurse here, exercise physiologists and I'm a respiratory therapist, and together, we devise a plan that helps them cope with their illness and do their activities of daily living,” she explains. Sharpe loves to see her patients grow in confidence after working through the program. Explore inspiring & meaningful careers at IU Health by visiting iuhealth.org/careers

Two registered nurses at IU Health North and West have joined the Central Indiana Nurses Honor Guard, honoring fellow nurses at the time of their deaths. They're now hoping to grow the group's numbers. Three years ago, Tonya Mitchell, a registered nurse at IU Health West, attended the funeral of her longtime nurse educator and mentor. During the service, 13 nurses dressed in the traditional white cap and uniform came in carrying a white carnation, bowed to her photo and said a few words during the ceremony. The group was the Central Indiana Nurses Honor Guard (CINHG). Part of a national network, the Nurses Honor Guard pays tribute to nurses at the time of their death by performing the Nightingale Tribute at the funeral or memorial service. This is similar to a military tribute and officially releases the nurse from their nursing duties. By the end of the ceremony, Mitchell knew she had to join the group. IU Health University Hospital has unveiled a new piece of revolutionary equipment called StarGuide- a SPECT/CT imaging device that is the first of its kind in the state and one of only nine in the U.S. This machine will allow for more precise, faster and safer treatment for IU Health patients receiving nuclear medicine therapies for neuroendocrine and prostate cancer. "It's both a CT scan and a nuclear medicine camera," said Dr. Mark Tann, an IU Health radiologist who specializes in abdominal radiology and nuclear medicine. "It's an amazing diagnostic tool for specific cases where regular X-rays or ultrasounds don't tell you what's going on."
