For BAT, it’s been an honour to host the 2024 CORESTA Congress – the world’s leading conference on tobacco and related product science in the beautiful city of Edinburgh (Scotland) from 13-17 October. CORESTA demonstrates the importance of collaboration amongst the entire scientific community to fully realise the public health opportunity of Tobacco Harm Reduction. It was a pleasure to welcome 500 delegates to the Congress, bringing together member and non-member organisations, from over 30 countries, including: companies, research institutes, laboratories, associations, and regulatory bodies. 2024 CORESTA Congress was focused on the theme of "Advancing Tobacco Harm Reduction through Scientific Collaboration". Opening the event, Danielle Tower, Head of Science & Regulatory Affairs at BAT, delivered a keynote speech outlining the progress BAT has made in driving forward Tobacco Harm Reduction: “The CORESTA Congress demonstrates the importance of collaboration amongst the entire scientific community to fully realise the public health opportunity of Tobacco Harm Reduction. We are proud to have hosted such an important event and strongly believe that positive global change is possible if all stakeholders recognise the potential of Tobacco Harm Reduction. To achieve this, more open conversations like those we have had this week are needed across the scientific and regulatory landscape, which is why we have recently launched Omni™ – Forward Thinking for a Smokeless World."

At BAT, we organise bi-monthly Lunch & Learn sessions featuring external speakers who share valuable business insights to inspire colleagues worldwide. In our latest edition in July, Chris Baréz-Brown, an expert in innovation and transformation, discussed strategies for embedding #innovation in our business and daily routines to foster a culture of innovation within the organisation. Chris inspired our people globally to embrace diverse perspectives and challenge negativity bias, leveraging brain states and creating supportive environments that encourage relaxation and playfulness. Innovation is crucial at BAT as we move towards a predominantly smokeless business and foster an inclusive workplace. We blend analytical rigor with creative exploration, ensuring every voice contributes to transformative ideas.
We have been honoured with the ‘Safety Performance Improvement Award’ at the Verdantix Environmental, Health and Safety Innovation Excellence Awards for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, marking our first global recognition for health and safety. Diego Campos, Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) Compliance Manager, collected our award at the Awards summit in Amsterdam, highlighting our dedication to enhancing safety measures across all functions. Over the past five years, we have achieved a 49% reduction in reported incidents, alongside significant improvements in serious injuries and total recordable incidents. Our global Health and Safety Centre of Excellence (CoE), established in 2021, has been pivotal in driving these results by identifying trends, addressing high-risk areas, and implementing targeted risk management initiatives. Proud of our team's dedication and significant progress in workplace safety.
