Our water supply isn’t infinite and as temperatures rise and the population continues to grow, there is a pressing need to think differently about how we can protect our most precious resource. Our CEO Mark Thurston recently took a trip to Bury St Edmunds to visit one of our largest infrastructure projects - the strategic pipeline project. We've recently passed the halfway mark for pipelaying - a critical milestone in this large-scale project. Once complete, the pipeline will help supply millions of litres of water for generations to come. In this video, Mark shares the latest updates on the project, as well as what to expect in the years to come and the importance of water reaching homes, schools and business in one of the fastest growing regions in our country.

Four events, 12 counties, 254 attendees and 863 post it notes later, and we’ve wrapped up our engagement events with Local Planning Associations (LPA). Delivering the government’s agenda for sustainable housing and economic growth will rely almost exclusively on transformative, large scale water infrastructure. Which is why, it’s essential we engage with key stakeholders across our region and ensure their voices are reflected in our business plan for the next five-years. The feedback during these events was overwhelmingly positive. We were able to share our plans to build much-needed infrastructure that will keep taps running and toilets flushing for years to come. However, to fully enable the delivery of these projects, water infrastructure must be prioritised at the planning stage. Which is why, we are asking for key decision makers to drive a greater connection between growth and the capacity of the water infrastructure and network. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eSv68_PD

This week, we were joined by the Greater Lincolnshire Local Authorities and key stakeholders across our region, at one of a series of events we're hosting to engage local planning authorities in our 2025 to 2030 business plans. Over the next five-year period, we're investing approximately £1billion into Greater Lincolnshire. In the opening keynote speech, our CEO Mark Thurston spoke about the importance of driving growth within the region and pledged to continue the collaborative working relationship we have with the local planning authorities. These events have been incredibly beneficial, and much was learnt on both sides. Collaboration and partnership will be vital over the next five years, as we prepare to deliver our largest ever capital infrastructure programme. With more intense rainfall and shifting weather patterns, our drainage system is having to process more water than ever before. Despite significant investment, into upgrading our existing infrastructure and building new sewers to allow for the growing population and changing climate, there is still more to do – and crucially more to do together. Many parts of the drainage system such as road drains, gullies, ditches, rivers and canals, all have different owners. This means, when the entire system becomes overwhelmed, we can’t solve things alone. By joining forces with local councils, Lead Local Flood Authorities, the Environment Agency and National Highways and even customers, we can continue to address the problem locally. Through flooding partnerships like Norfolk Strategic Flood Alliance through Norfolk County Council, we are beginning to see first-hand, how we can deliver real change at a local level.
As the fastest growing region in the UK, we recycle a lot of water – in fact, over a billion litres of sewage every day! But as the population continues to grow and our sewer networks are processing more human and domestic waste, we’re always looking for more natural solutions. Treatment wetlands are a key part of our vision for the future, following the successful launch of our flagship wetland in Ingoldisthorpe, Norfolk in 2019. Delivered in partnership with Norfolk Rivers Trust, it was the first of its kind in England. Five years on, we took our CEO Mark Thurston to see how much has changed. Now operating as a natural treatment plant for millions of litres of water, these wetlands have become a beautiful habitat and a flourishing haven for wildlife 🌱☀ Currently under review, our 2025-2030 business plan, proposes a record investment of £4 billion to enhance the environment, which includes building more treatment wetlands across our region. Our water supply isn’t infinite and as temperatures rise and the population continues to grow, there is a pressing need to think differently about how we can protect our most precious resource. Large scale investment in water resilience has been taking place across our region since the 1990’s, but more needs to be done. Which is why, as part of our latest business plan, we’ve proposed our biggest ever investment into water infrastructure, totalling almost £1.5bn. Discussions are still underway with Ofwat, but securing the right level of investment will be critical in the delivery of the infrastructure the East of England needs to grow and thrive. In our latest blog, Anglian Water’s Head of Supply Demand Strategy, Geoff Darch, discusses how we’re developing new supplies of water and investing in securing a water supply for generations to come.
