Nothing to say all good for me
Pros
- I learned a great deal during my time at the company, and I had the opportunity to form lasting friendships with colleagues and find incredible mentors who genuinely wanted to help me grow. Even though many of us have since moved on, I will always value the connections made during my time there. - The hybrid work schedule was a great perk, providing a good balance between in-office and remote work. - I was fortunate to have my own office, which provided a quiet and focused space for creative work.
Kontras
Onboarding: The onboarding process was lacking, with minimal guidance at the start. I often felt like I was expected to learn everything on the job, which can be challenging for new hires and sets a difficult tone for getting up to speed. Process and Project Management: The organization of workflows and project assignments was often chaotic, especially for creative roles. There were frequently no project briefs, and often kick-offs would happen on the day a project was due, leaving little time for proper creative development. On multiple occasions, I was left out of initial discussions and had to rely on secondhand information to understand project requirements. The overall process often felt like a constant “fire drill,” with urgent requests popping up at the last minute. When everything is marked as urgent, it creates an environment of stress and anxiety. Especially when you ask for more time and get met with, “you’re underestimating yourself”. Communication & Transparency: Communication within the agency, particularly around leadership structure, was unclear. After switching teams, I struggled for months to get a clear answer on who my direct report was. When I asked, I was met with, “lol nobody knows”. Additionally, leadership frequently moved people between teams without proper communication, which led to confusion about roles and responsibilities. This lack of transparency made it difficult to understand where I stood within the company. Career Growth: There was little clarity around career progression. Despite consistent positive feedback, leadership did not provide clear guidance on how to advance within the company. When I asked about career development, I was often told to “keep doing good work,” and, “enjoy where you are” without any actionable steps to help me grow. A year into my role, I was disheartened to learn that even the head of the creative department didn’t know what my title was when asked by another coworker, despite being the person overseeing my career. Over time, it became clear that career advancement opportunities were limited, which ultimately led me to seek other opportunities. Work Environment & Leadership: There was a noticeable difference in how employees were treated, with some individuals receiving more attention and recognition than others. This favoritism created an uncomfortable atmosphere and made it difficult to ask for mentorship or career advice without feeling uncertain about the response. Portfolio Restrictions: One significant challenge for creative employees is that a large portion of the work done at the agency was tied to a single client, and none of it could be shared externally— even in a password-protected portfolio. This restriction made it difficult to build an up-to-date and diverse portfolio, which is essential when seeking new opportunities. Despite the company’s emphasis on the importance of a strong portfolio when hiring, this limitation leaves employees at a disadvantage in the job market and I fear they do this for a reason. Overall Experience While there were certainly frustrations related to the company’s processes, communication, and growth opportunities, I’m ultimately grateful for the experience. It taught me a lot about the kind of work environment I value, particularly when it comes to leadership that actively invests in employee development and maintains open, transparent communication. In my current role, I am supported by a team that values my input and helps me work toward my long-term career goals — something that was lacking during my time at the agency. My overall work-related anxiety has significantly decreased, and many people have noticed how much happier I am since leaving bohan. Final Thoughts For those early in their careers, I would recommend finding an employer who prioritizes professional development and supports employees’ growth aspirations. A company that values and invests in its team fosters a positive, motivating work environment where people feel empowered to contribute and develop.
