Pros

Product is great and hitting a major in demand niche. Good perks (discounted food and drinks, jeans and tshirt every day, office gym, great new building) The company as a whole seems to be doing well. The product was really the first affordable product in the market and has majority market share. The CEO is young and energetic and is trying to build a culture of active, energetic, fun, talented people. They don't have a problem spending money either. From the brand new office, to the office gym and coffee bar - when you first walk in you think this place would be awesome to work for. Be advised… that is NOT the case.

I worked in the "Technology" department as they like to call it. So I can only speak in regards to that. The majority of the departments seem to be fairly happy with low turnover and fairly high morale. Every department has its issues but most seem stable. This is NOT the case for the tech dept. Developers, IT techs, Netsuite admins LOOK ELSEWHERE. The dept was started by a horrendous CIO that got fired and they brought in a "hot shot" from Seattle who came from Nike. I'll let you be the judge of why a hotshot from Nike living in Seattle would move to Coppell TX for a 80 person startup. It seems he is barely qualified to be a project manager let alone a CIO. He is clearly extremely insecure and in WAY over his head. To compensate for all of this he hired 2 of his close personal friends and previous colleagues. I assume he offered them very high salaries because they moved their family from out of state to come work at Varidesk. As planned these two quickly rose to middle management. I thought the CIO was bad and then I met these two. Openly insulting employees out loud, discussing their side businesses that they run at work, extremely aggressive attitudes, close minded to any new ideas, belittling their subordinates openly and out loud for the entire dept including the CIO to hear. These are your future leaders if you take a job here. It would be one thing if all of this was going on and projects were being completed on time and their projects were successful and making the company more successful. But it has been the complete opposite. Every single project has been late and when it finally launched was an entire disaster. If someone wasn't fired for it and thrown under the bus it was all to be very carefully discussed and swept under the rug. The only reports back to the CEO were that everything is great and going as planned. Turn over is extremely high in this dept and when people quit or are fired this management trio openly talks down about the most recent fire or talks about another biting the dust like it is absolutely no big deal. Complete and utter failure at the management level in the tech dept will eventually be the downfall of the website and website sales if management doesn't do some something drastic. I personally did not get fired or quit without notice. I gave my notice and left peacefully. I loved the company and saw such a great future there but could not handle the constant negativity, insulting behavior, extremely low morale, wildly inappropriate management and complete lack of leadership in the technology department.

As with others on this site, we find your review helpful. Based on the length and detail of this review along with the 1-star rating, it appears you feel betrayed by what your thought would be an awesome company to work for long term. It’s unfortunate that leadership wasn’t aware of the magnitude of dissatisfaction by members of the Technology team that have recently departed, and we take responsibility if you did not feel you could share your concerns before resorting to resigning from a company that you loved. Our CEO is very involved and cares about the work environment to the point that he interviews every hire to ensure a “right fit”. It is disappointing that something isn’t working as intended and we are committed to working with and guiding our employees (including management) through the growth and changes that come with being a fast growing company. We are honored to be named #1 on the 2016 SMU Cox Dallas 100 list, but that achievement is largely due to the diverse and wonderful VARIDESK employees. Our employees have committed to making us the best in the market and we are committed to making our employees the best they can be. We appreciate the advice given in your review and will work to ensure we provide the proper development opportunities to all of our employees so they can positively contribute the culture our CEO is so invested in building.

Vari has a beautiful office and very small but appreciated perks and cultural events.

This company went through 5 years of pain, and every employee that has been part of it shows their battle scars. They let go of a vast number of very qualified and talented team members through the past few years and made do with a skeleton crew, and the results show. They lied about why a lot of the senior leadership left. They are no longer the high growth startup, and any chance of recapturing growth died in the hands of the CEO who couldn't be bothered to dive deeper into teams with obviously weak leaders. Competitors have eaten their lunch, poached their talent, and nearly every alumni of Vari is thriving once they left or were mercifully let go. This is not a sinking ship, this is a rowboat.
