Pros

Good salary and benefits, good place to make friends and pick up experience if you are just out of college

Kontras

Where do I start? The most stressful work environment I have ever experienced. Micro-management / classroom environment, unsociable working hours, constant change of priorities, lack of trust from management. The second the working environment gets a bit calmer or normal, management come down on you like hyenas and shift priorities around again. If you want to progress here, management still have the 1980’s mentality of being chained to your desk every night until 8-9pm (to the point of exhaustion). Doing the same job from home (i.e. more flexibility) doesn’t count. They want bodies on the ground. If you leave punctually you get that disapproving look of disgust as if you are the biggest slacker in the world. Would rather be on unemployment benefits than go back here. If you want work/life balance and work in an environment where you feel empowered, trusted and made feel that you can do it your way and in your time, this is not the place for you. The closest thing to boot camp I have ever experienced. To add insult to injury they feed you at Quarter End with fast food and junk food and expect you to be grateful for it, at the expense of your public holidays, weekends and late evenings of course. Don’t let the benefits fool you, stay away from this place.

Pros

VMware is a big company but in many ways had a startup vibe. That was great because the resources and infrastructure of a big company were there, but it gave most people I worked with freedom to work on many projects, influence, move around, and contribute in many ways. Plus, many things moved faster than they might at other companies of the same size. Perks were really great including bonuses, events on the campus, opportunities, etc.

Kontras

The biggest con is the annual layoff. During most of the years I was there, we were growing like crazy, beating expectations, gaining in stock price, etc. It was always positive and upward. However, every single January, it was known that there would be a round of layoffs, even when all numbers were looking great as they almost always were. Management called it restructuring. But, over the years, some really good people were let go for no apparent reason. Then to add insult to injury, a week or two later, there would be a company quarterly meeting discussing how VMware was doing so well and is still hiring, but they had to make some changes. It always felt dishonest and the sympathy for those let go came across as disingenuous.
