Kontras
I was hired to work as a project manager, but asked to go beyond my primary role. My immediate boss was condescending, disrespectful, tried to intimidate me into going with the program! Granted, this was my first exposure to the mad world of startup companies, but this company was a nightmare. The employees who worked the phones were threatened with job loss if they refused to work unannounced overtime; they were asked to work in cramped settings; many hated their jobs, but stayed because the "pay" was good. They hired me to work as a project manager, a role that I've worked at, in one fashion or another, for over seven years. Yet my immediate boss decided to test my project management skills by asking me to conduct cold calls all across the nation, in hopes of finding select companies willing and prepared to partner with Tech Service Today! Keep in mind that, between making these discovery calls, I was also making follow-up calls on some preliminary projects assigned to me, as well. After being in the company for a few days, my boss called my mobile, while I was driving home, with news that I did not pass his "secret" contest, of which he pitted my call volume and quality against another employee, whose only role was to make such calls! And this other employee's mother had worked at the company for over a year, so the daughter had 'inside" information which I neither cared nor sought after. My boss began telling me how slowly I worked at cold calling! Mind you, the reason I DO NOT work sales jobs is because I HATE SALES!!! I DID NOT APPLY, NOR WAS AM I WILLING TO ACCEPT A SALES JOB, EVER!!! Adding insult to injury, my boss began criticizing me for my lack of enthusiasm and speediness in making the calls. Then this same boss summarily told me I was "let go!" I was livid! Before hanging up, he had the decency to ask if I had any questions -- that's when I gave him a piece of my mind!
