Free gym membership, good opportunity for ambitious people new to the industry. Relative autonomy to run the gym as your own. Some of the people you work with are lovely and customer interaction is valued. Business practice is not uncommon in the fitness industry.

The working environment is toxic, head office give out the impression that their employees are "family", but this is so that they can ask the world of you for nothing in return. They will make gyms compete against each other and the majority of people who end up on top are openly disingenuous, backbiting and use other people's ideas as their own. Employees are expected to work overtime without extra pay and the commission targets are wildly unrealistic. Only two full time (45 hrs) employees run the gym, this means you are sales, administration, operations, class instructors, advertisement, HR and cleaners. However, in a typical day you will spend the majority of your time calling leads and explaining why you have their personal details, followed by aggressive sales tactics and tedious brand standard slogans. Heaven forbid a lead might want to think about joining the gym or even worse cancel for any reason, if this happens you are to use your training in manipulating a customer to stay with the gym. Forget sick pay, this policy may not be unusual however during the pandemic I was informed it was my choice whether I wanted to come to work despite being unwell with a dry cough and headache and that I would not receive pay if I stayed at home. I had also told them I had been in contact with a person who was displaying symptoms and had been in contact with a person who had been told by a professional they had covid 19. Occasionally you do have the opportunity to have a say in the direction the gym takes e. g. The class schedule or planning an event and the company organises fun get togethers, however a typical day is administration and sales calls/ tours/completing memberships on the computer.
