Pros

I have over seven years' experience in information security and IT audit and have worked for a few different firms in both industry and the Big Four. Nothing compares to Schellman. Benefits--in terms of both quarterly cash bonuses and non-monetary items like health insurance--are second to none. Leadership, including the CEO, is incredibly engaged in not only the direction of the firm, but the opinions of staff on matters ranging from excursions at the next company outing (yes, that is a thing!) to improvements to our audit software (which is already better than anything I've used at the Big Four). Managers, by and large, are driven not by utilization and the engagement budget (billable hours are not a thing here), but by the well-being and development of their staff. Intensive training opportunities are almost endless and are prioritized by the firm. Seniors are given opportunities to try--and transfer into--different service lines if so desired, with relatively minimal fuss in most cases. Moreover, Senior Associates are less seniors in the Big Four sense--constantly reviewing, correcting, and teaching new staff--and more experienced staff doing the job right because they know how to do it. Seniors are valued for their experience and technical knowledge, and aren't forced to mentor a staff or climb the promotion ladder if they don't have any interest in doing so. Finally, both managers and leadership trust us to get the job done--even when we are working remotely. I am not receiving calls in the middle of the night or on weekends as to why a particular workpaper is not yet ready for review. Overall, Schellman cares about its people--and demonstrates that every day.

Kontras

Given the smaller size of the firm and geographical spread of our clients, a fair amount (at least) of travel is typically involved in our engagements. Likewise, the relatively few firm offices are concentrated in larger cities; smaller geographies (including mine) do not have offices. Thus, when not on the road, I am working from home. While beneficial in a number of ways, working from home may not be suitable to those earlier in their career who need additional, one-on-one mentorship or technical development--or for those who simply prefer face-to-face interaction with teammates. Again, not necessarily a negative for everyone, but something to keep in mind.

Pros

Management frequently improves benefits. Management really knows the business well. The company has historically been well insulated from economic downturns. So many opportunities to stand out and make a name for yourself

Kontras

Data driven decisions still a work in progress. Long term vision is likely 1 ish year.

Pros

The people. Peers are great to work with and very supportive. Some of the leaders in the teams are as well. Perks were GREAT but have slowly been taken away or the costs went up.

Kontras

Where do I begin? Wholesale executive turnover. Technology projects that we're supposed to say are awesome but aren't really that great. They take up more time to figure out than they're worth and we know those are meant to take our jobs. AI, offshore, temp labor. No thanks. It was a place I loved working at but has slowly just become a job that makes me feel like I should be watching for somewhere else to go. Just in case. The culture has changed quite a bit too. It used to feel like a place where we all wanted to work together but that's slowly fading.
