Pros

Roland has great people, they play by the rules, and they really do want you to have a good work environment. Reasonable expectations in the category of work/life balance. People who work here have families and obligations outside the organization and they are not expected to minimize those obligations. Many people have young children or coach a team on the side. This is a nice part of Roland DGA. The PTO structure (unless it has changed) is flexible and favourable for most employees. The office is located right in the middle of Orange County, there is no charge for parking and it is always available. There is a small onsite gym, locker rooms, showers, and basic kitchen in the building. There are occasional company-wide breakfasts, lunches, or snacks. You can always find gum and candy on the second floor. Company has a rich and proud history as well as a strong presence in the market. If your position has to the with the products (sales, marketing, product management, technical support) there is a strong chance that you will travel locally or outside of California to support sales efforts. These are fun experiences and become some of the best bonding experiences aside from the quarterly happy hours. Roland has made significant efforts to move into new markets (dental implants, 3D products) outside of digital print (their strength). The idea is to make more money obviously as they once did with digital print products.

Kontras

I never held a management or executive position so this comes from the entry/mid-level employee perspective. Slow to change or adapt. You will hear a lot about Roland's great products of the past. Roland is no longer the stand alone leader in this industry as it once was. Competition has become brutal and driven margins down at alarming rates. Because Roland has a strong brand they are constantly the focal point of attack for other companies such as Mimaki and HP who want to steal market share. This is hard to absorb because these other companies have a war chest of financial and marketing resources. The digital print industry is a small world. This means the competition is stiff for promotions amongst employees. Many employees have left their original company but they inevitably end up at another similar player in the industry. You'll see ex-coworkers at tradeshows or hear about them competing for your customers. People have been in this game for 20+ years and they all know each other. Very few people leave the industry and once they've found a comfortable role, they are glued to it. Not growing. This a not a place to grow a career efficiently. You will need to put in 10+ years here and wait for other employees to retire, quit, or get fired (very rare) before a promotion opens up. Sometimes when this happens the position you wanted gets dissolved, they hire from outside, or they simply keep it open without replacing it for months/years. I have seen several people wait around years for promotions they deserve that never happen. If you aren't in a rush then this can be a 'Pro' but if your intention is to significantly grow your career or income, is not the place for you. It is stable, constant, and slow. Company-wide raises are 3% annually unless you hold an executive position. So if you make $20/hour for a year, you will be making $20.60 the next year. You are not paid based on contribution. This generates complacency amongst employees or a cruise control mentality as it will at any company. ' Why should I go above and beyond if you're going to pay me the same anyway?' If you accept an offer make sure you will be happy in that role and pay category for a minimum of 5 years.
