It is only a matter of time before it will come to light like the Titan Submarine disaster or the Theranos scandal that Roke is a company based on flawed engineering technology. Roke is a small company, severely financially stressed, struggling to 'scale-up' because it is fundamentally flawed, unethical, lacking foundation in any project management or engineering lifecycle process. Roke recruit people (graduates, young professionals, academics and veterans, etc.) as "bottoms on seats" where resources are dumped into unsuitable projects, lacking any training or experience in defence context and/or basic technical systems engineering competence. Graduates and civilians are tasked to develop tests for complex military systems, without review, training or experience, so in effect, marking their own homework. Management actively carry out actions to threaten, abuse and bully, deceive, cheat or gain unfair advantage, for monetary gain. This implies dishonest, criminal or deceitful intent, involving misrepresented statistics, flawed test processes and false declarations. Extremely poor technical management causes severe stress and harm and damage to its employees. HR are complicit in failing to investigate grievances and a safety-related 'protected disclosure' that is in the public interest.
Pros
I’m still relatively early in my time here, but my experience so far has been genuinely positive. I’ve had a good amount of autonomy in my role, which has allowed me to actually make an impact rather than feel boxed in. Collaborating with different business units has also been a highlight — people have been open, supportive, and willing to share knowledge. The leadership shown by our new MD has made a noticeable difference. There’s a clearer direction and some much‑needed energy behind the changes that are happening. It feels like the company is in a real period of growth, and while there’s definitely a lot still in motion, it’s exciting to be part of it. That said, I’ve read through the more critical reviews on here, and I can understand where some of those concerns come from. Not everything is perfect, and the organisation is still ironing out processes and ways of working as it scales. But from my own experience, there’s been real improvement, a drive for change and a sense that things are moving the right way. Overall, a good place to be if you like ownership, want to collaborate widely across the business, and are comfortable working through a bit of change while the company grows.
