If you are not a white, straight male who is fairly thin, you will not get promoted even if you are a great employee who excels in all the challenges and opportunities presented to you. Also, the employees who are low performers that know how to talk a good game get promoted over the high performers who know how to do the work well. Promotions are not given based on achievments and merit but solely based on office politics and appearances.
