Pros

Day-to-day perks, like cafeterias with very good food, fitness centers, on-site wellness center, Zen Zone with sauna and steam room, company subsidized massage and acupuncture, social events with lots of food and beer. Beautiful facilities, especially Feynman Center and Agora Building. Access to Woods Hollow Children's Center, if you want to drop a ton of money on having your kids close by during the day. Good place to be non-management. You can have a long and happy and very secure career if your ambitions are modest.

Kontras

Promega has a difficult time getting rid of people in leadership who are toxic or ineffective. I'm aware of two who were the primary reason at least 10 really high performing people left the company and there were several more that were on the verge. That's unacceptable. The first was finally let go after much too long a process, despite constant and consistent feedback from his direct reports. The second is still there, and is easily the most toxic person I ever worked with. People universally talk about her with this sense of disbelief that someone so awful could still have a job. It's a problem, and it's amazing the company doesn't address it more promptly. The self-funded medical insurance is crazy expensive and doesn't cover as much as previous insurance did. Compensation is pretty lackluster, opportunities to move up are scarce, and the closer you get to working with Bill, the more you are at the mercy of his current opinions, which seem to change pretty frequently and often lead to people being let go. There's little sense that he trusts his leadership team, and he still operates in the details of entrepreneur mode rather than the vision of CEO mode. This whole thing with the Usona Institute is also fairly baffling that he allows there to be any obvious connection between Promega and a place that's exploring hallucinogenic drugs. It'll be interesting to see what happens to the company when he finally retires.

Pros

Promega is kind of an old-school company, in the best sense. They hire people who are the best fit for the company, not just who may have the best credentials (but this is more important in R&D and product management roles). I've seen so many cases where someone really started at ground zero in terms of experience and rose up the ranks. It goes to show you that they do invest in their people, and that is why there's so many who have stuck around for decades. In my experience management is highly supportive of learning, innovation, and creativity, so if you have a good idea that shows promise you'll probably have the opportunity to explore it.

Kontras

At times, there is such a strong focus on the newest thing, with the priorities changing very quickly. Due to this there are cases when there isn't enough time to develop a fully mature product, or gauge it's effectiveness. To be fair this is a problem in most organizations, but you can end up feeling a little disoriented by the rapidly shifting landscape. I would say this could be a challenging environment for someone who is slow to adapt or pick up new technical skills.
