Pros

The work is meaningful, and especially as a newer clinician you will learn a lot. The agency hires MFTs, MSWs, and LPCCs for therapist roles. Staff tend to be close, and there is a unique wraparound, recovery focus and culture of acceptance in terms of life experience; the agency heavily - but not exclusively - hires people with a history of incarceration, substance use, and/or mental health issues. The agency also matches DMH salaries for therapists, something that is almost unheard of for County-contracted nonprofits.

Kontras

Staff report disparities in pay that appear to reflect gender or racial bias. The company rarely hires coordinators, supervisors, or off-site therapists from outside; promotion is primarily from within, creating a culture in which staff are not infrequetly assigned to roles that they do not want. The hiring practices also create a somewhat insular culture. Professionalism is questionable, and several staff were fired for various unacceptable ethical or legal issues during my time there.

- Management team can be unsupportive and, at times, intimidating - Frequent experiences of microaggressions and passive-aggressive - communication from leadership - Limited support or advocacy from supervisors - Clinicians often feel undervalued and overextended - Workload expectations can exceed reasonable limits, with unclear role boundaries. - Hiring managers are bias and already know who they want to promote. I was a third wheel in many hiring opportunities. Overall, during my time here, I often felt overworked, underpaid, and professionally undervalued. There were instances where responsibilities extended beyond my role, including completing tasks typically assigned to supervisors. Additionally, the management style could feel overly controlling, which impacted morale and autonomy. While the organization offers good opportunities for gaining clinical hours and has strong frontline staff, improvements in leadership approach, communication, and clinician support are needed to create a healthier work environment.
