I met some great people and the lower level staff always looked out for eachother

Not a lot/no opportunities for people to increase their knowledge and usefulness even if it was desired. they would rather let you go and hire someone else and pay more for them instead of keeping you and paying for education/training. Upper management rarely asked from input from lower level workers about business decisions and when it didn't work out it was a major loss for the company.
