Product Portfolio at one time was outstanding. Scale and ability to attract talented Scientists and Clinicians were also a benefit. Each research site was told that your ability to deliver on portfolio was critical to the site's viability.
Kontras
Frequent site closures and lack of ability to focus on a single 'game plan' certainly dampened much of the enthusiasm & luck needed to deliver NDAs. The rate of in-licensing attrition was nearly as poor as development of 'in-house' candidates (many phase III pfailures). Retention of talented Scientists has also become more difficult as everyone counts the months until atorvastatin's patent expires.
