Pros

I worked with some of the smartest and most insightful Joe's I know. Despite their habit of playing intense video games every afternoon in the office, they do solicit, support and expect good work from their remote workers. Evidently, they need commuters more than any other kind of worker ... they're designs for outside of their 50-mile radius never seemed to manifest.

Kontras

Like many start-ups, or any business for that matter, they're not entirely transparent as to their expectations. Plus, tangential business relations with locals in the DC/VA/MD area who have competing interests in my area, who express dissatisfaction with my work and also suppress any chance I have of showing or participating in the work, trumped those of their own FT employees.

Pros

Solid leadership team that has had proven success together in the past at a former company. Nice people! Technically, strong. Growing, and a strategy in place to do so. 100% remote-first company. If you love to build, you want to work here.

Kontras

They are still tightenging things up and in discovery mode; new processes are being developed (change management in place) - this isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Pros

I worked with amazing people. Remote work.

Kontras

I worked in internal operations at Mods and initially hoped the company’s global reach and emphasis on “diversity” would mean a progressive and inclusive workplace. Unfortunately, that was not the reality. The leadership team lacks any real diversity — the faces in charge do not reflect the workforce they claim to value. Much of the “diversity” touted comes from international contractors who are treated as full-time employees in terms of workload and expectations, but receive none of the benefits or protections. It’s a disingenuous setup that feels exploitative at best. There were repeated instances where I was asked to engage in practices that felt ethically questionable, with my name attached, while leadership stayed at arm’s length to avoid accountability. The internal culture is rife with microaggressions, especially toward people with different cultural or professional perspectives. Leadership, particularly the Chief Strategy Officer and the CEO, are dismissive of differing viewpoints and foster an environment where only those who conform are heard. Company retreats and get-togethers raised red flags due to a lack of boundaries and a sense of exclusivity. Overall, it’s a high-stress environment driven by fear, performative values, and toxic power dynamics. Proceed with caution if you value ethical standards, inclusion, and psychological safety.
