Pros
Metaphrasis is a professional, boutique-style firm. I found them professional yet laid back enough that I could feel comfortable communicating with them. What I found to be impressive is that the company owner herself was on the front lines scheduling and coordinating our interpreting assignments
Metaphrasis base pay may be lower than other firms but they do reimburse mileage as long as the hospital or client is willing to reimburse. Metaphrasis does pay a 2 hour minimum even if the patient does not show up to an appointment. So I would take their base pay plus the handsome mileage I received any day over firms that pay more but do not reimburse mileage. They also reimburse public transportation expenses, which is nice.
Friendly and helpful staff, lots of communication via e-mail or telephone and very professional structure as far as policies and expectations from interpreters go. If you are an interpreter starting out in the field, I would consider giving this firm a try. Assignments are in various hospitals in Chicago and subrbs
Kontras
Payment is once a month (but is with any interpreting firm as a 1099). Work for me was either feast or famine and assignments are given based on company needs, how far the interpreter can travel, and the driving vs public transportation issue was a factor for me in accepting assignments
