Pros

The actual structure and concept of Mathnasium makes sense and works well for a lot of students. I honestly wish this had existed when I was younger because I think that the techniques used are effective. The biggest pro for working at this particular location was the children -- lots of sweet kids who really benefited from the center's teaching.

Kontras

Again, this is specifically for the Santa Monica center and not corporate HQ. I was a Center Director at the time I worked there: 1) Owner is micromanaging to an extreme -- he has used the security cameras to instruct employees how to behave (giving notes as extreme as telling people to face certain directions at specific times). That being said, he also frequently changes his mind on what the priorities are and is rather abrasive in the way that he tells employees what he wants. 2) I cannot speak for how the situation is now since it's been some time since I worked there, but at the time that I worked there, there was only one tutor who was solid on higher level math. This would lead to him being constantly in demand and the other tutors being unable to help students who were at a more advanced level. 3) There were issues with staff undermining instructions from management. They are all mostly college students who (understandably) want to have fun and chat with each other, but they'd frequently lose sight of the fact that they were there to work and could be irresponsible. In this case, it didn't help that management was also inconsistent, but from my experience, there were some times when rules had been established for quite some time (ex. taking out the trash at the end of a shift) and they still wouldn't do it despite constant reminders. 4) Some of the kids were difficult and misbehaved, which distracted the kids who were there to learn. 5) Some of the parents were difficult and demanding, to the point of interrupting tutoring sessions to "helicopter". Others were also lackadaisical in their attitudes about picking up their children, which led to management having to stay late to wait with kids while their parents came to pick them up (often without much of an excuse as to why they were late). Many of these parents were also lackadaisical in their attitude about paying tuition on time, which is another issue entirely... 6) Management tried to cut costs by pinching pennies. They would frequently send tutors home with no notice to save money on paying them for their entire shift. This was awkward to do as a Center Director because I was frequently told "Go on the floor and send _____ home right now" and led to low morale. It also led to being short-staffed later because a rush of students would come in right when tutors had gone home -- again, priorities shifting on a dime and seemingly on a whim by management. 7) The schedule was pretty all-encompassing -- Monday-Thursday 11-8, off Fridays, then weekends 10-2. It was hard to have much work-life balance. 8) No healthcare benefits (at least at the time I worked there).

We appreciate your comments. We love our Center Managers and consider them all part of our family as we did you. I'll try to address your comments as fairly as possible and also to give any reader of this forum the proper context so that they can evaluate wheter working here with us is appropriate for them. We give all of our Center Managers full autonomy to run the centers as they see fit to ensure the best possible instruction for the students and the best care for their customers. We provide weekly management calls with all the Center Managers led by our Regional Director to provide education, sales and management training and to set clear expectations within our organization. We have all of our Managers attend a yearly Mathnasium convention where they learn from other Mathnasium Center Managers the tools to be successful in their role. All of our Managers are provided a Center Manager protocol guide and we as an organization coach all of our Managers to follow those protocols along with how they fit in with their own personality. Cameras in the learning center are a requirement of the franchisor. We, as management, look into centers infrequently, and solely to ensure that we are delivering the best quality instruction to our students. We encourage engaging instruction where an instructor is facing a child to see and understand what the child is having difficulty with. Instructors that face the aisle are not engaged, are not focused and are not providing a level of instruction that we think is exceptional. All of our Managers are provided training on how to schedule instructors for their Mathnasium learning center. Some Managers do better jobs at scheduling than others and their instructors are informed well in advance as to when their shifts end. Like in any position, some Managers perform better than others. Some Managers make continual progress and some do not. As to pinching pennies, we pay or Managers in all of our markets, especially our Los Angeles market a very generous base, monthly bonus based on revenue, vacation days and car allowance. For most of our Center Managers, this is their first or second position out of college. I wont post here how you were ineffective in your role but am always open to a personal email from you if you want the feedback. We are always looking for exceptional people as instructors and Managers at all of our Mathnasium Learning Center locations. We currently have a Manager opportunity at our Marina Del Rey location and two Manager opportunities in Las Vegas. As we continue to grow as a Mathnasium franchisee, we will continue to learn and improve our operations and our management team.
