Kontras
The company thinks that the optimal path forward is to continue doing everything slightly differently until morale improves, despite multiple employees insisting this is the corporate equivalent of rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Some directors and VPs are pundits on a power trip and have their egos (and insecurity) so high, they are willing to throw out any notion of business value to chase internal public praise on questionable side quests. Departments are currently engaged in an olympic-level blame-passing relay race, where they effortlessly toss accountability back and forth while waiting for someone to produce a strategy beyond “let’s just monetize harder”, which primarily hurts the customer and actually makes it harder to monetize as our mindset becomes monetization-driven, not customer-driven. A rocket ship flying blind in deep space, except the rocket was built by people who don’t know how rockets work, and leadership insists it will eventually strike gold if we just believe harder. Meanwhile some higher-ups are likely typing in ChatGPT “how to sell B2B SaaS”. Middle management, meanwhile, are at record levels of back pain from carrying the workload leaders should do but silently choose to ignore. Half the company clinging to its brokerage roots and the other half loudly insisting it’s a SaaS firm, leaving everyone stuck in a bizarre identity crisis where nobody actually knows what business they’re in and where they're work is going towards. From afar you can only conclude some executives view the company as a cash cow, while others simply lack the basic competence required but retain their positions through innovative new forms of corporate cronyism. It may seem like a revolving door of questionable hires during the tech boom, but people are actually generally very capable. The truth is less surprising: it boils down to a deep lack of company culture, which results in people with very different mindsets, styles and principles being hired, and in the absence of a strong culture, creates tribal factions that make the company resemble less a workplace and more a a season of hunger games. A high-stakes improv show where no one knows the script, but the pay is good.
