Pros
They are constantly hiring and it is quite easy to get a job as long as you look like a decent person that seem to be able to handle labour work. There is always some one from the management on-site to handle refunds, employee discounts, and complaints. Most customers and co-workers are nice, hard-working people. The job is very simple and easy. The schedule can be flexible if you insist. It is easy to become part of the management because few people would like to stay for long-term. Company does pay over-time based on government regulations. Good team work. Employee discount on regular items. One free banana per shift to eat.
Kontras
Minimum wage. Long hours working standing. May have to work more than 5 or 6 hours before taking a break depending on the work load. High turn-over. Some employees do not speak English well enough to communicate with customers. Unfair treatment between men and women: 1) Men get hired without having to memorize hundreds of produce codes. They can take time to remember all the numbers after working a while being stock persons. Some are allowed to be exempt based on the store manager's discretion. Women, however, have to memorize them usually within a couple of weeks in order to work. Some women have to pass a test before being hired. If they fail, they are not hired. 2) A male shift leader was allowed to print and circulate porn email and got away from it. He is a friend of the store manager. He later was OK to come in late often sitting in the office doing personal things on-line and being rude and unprofessional. A female shift leader was evaluated as doing a poor job simply because some of the display was not full enough due to short staffing that day.
