Pros

I have been a long time classroom teacher at Friends Seminary. It has been a place where I have been valued for my professionalism. I treasure my relationships with colleagues and I have grown as a teacher over the years. In recent years, the school has ramped up its commitment to diversity and inclusion. The school has a teacher's association (union) that works hard to protect uphold fair labor practices without imposing unreasonable work rules. The school has a strong tradition of equality that supports the idea that everyone has a seat at the table. The community is quite progressive on issues of sexual orientation. Teacher salaries are very good!

Kontras

Like many Manhattan private schools, the school struggles with economic inequality. As the school has grown in the past decade, it has been harder to know all the teachers, all the children and all of the staff and community fractures as a result. Change happens slowly and traditions are hard to challenge.

Pros

The school has many smart and dedicated students.

Kontras

During my time at Friends Seminary, I experienced a noticeable disconnect between the administration and the faculty. Many of my colleagues voiced concerns about a lack of support from leadership, and unfortunately, I had similar challenges. Despite my strong commitment to both students and my peers, my contributions went largely unrecognized by the administration. I also observed that some of the school’s practices seemed to fall short in adequately preparing students for the reality of higher education and the workforce. I entered the role with high expectations, but left with the realization that broader trends in education — particularly an increasing emphasis on ideological uniformity — are shaping the way K-12 schools function. This shift appears to limit opportunities for students to develop essential critical thinking skills and the ability to engage with diverse viewpoints, which are crucial in today’s world. Overall, my experience at Friends Seminary was disappointing. I’d encourage prospective employees to carefully evaluate whether the school’s values and leadership align with their own, as the current culture may not be conducive to everyone’s professional growth or teaching philosophy.
