Pros

The company has a strong client base in the life sciences industry, and a management team that genuinely cares and lives out the company values. The fully remote model is a huge plus, especially with the added bonus of semi-annual, in-person (company-paid) events that help foster connection. There are plenty of opportunities for growth, and the team culture is fantastic—everyone is kind, talented, collaborative, and (for the most part) enjoys their work. Engine Room has significantly grown in employees and the number of clients they serve.

Kontras

The PTO policy is disappointing and needs serious improvement. Teams tend to be top-heavy, with a lack of staff and senior accountants to support the workload. Technical accounting training and support could be better. Additionally, the scheduling and resourcing system could be revamped—better utilization of employees is needed. Some are working horrendous hours, some are barely hitting 40 hour work weeks. As Engine Room grows, they need to better plan for sustainability.

Pros

Really great remote firm focused on providing growth opportunities

Kontras

No upward review process that provides the opportunity for feedback to your managers. No company defined matrix for level expectations making it difficult to set goals.

Pros

Remote work, decent initial pay, good benefits and 401k contribution.

Kontras

Engine Room provides outsourced accounting services for biotech and IT companies. Management expects you to work excessive hours, often supporting 4+ companies simultaneously while providing only 2 weeks of vacation annually, so burnout is rampant. They have favored employees who spend an exorbitant amount of time micromanaging while providing limited support. Their client onboarding team is very disorganized leaving the "permanent" team members to clean up workbooks, payroll, compliance, etc. while performing required monthly tasks, They have semiannual rah-rah sessions in CA that are not mandatory but expected causing extra stress to meet deadlines while traveling. Engine Room is ALWAYS hiring due to their high turnover rate. They operate on a churn-and-burn basis as there are always new accountants to throw to the wolves. The initial pay is decent, but growth (financially and professionally) is limited.
