If you are lucky and have right sponsor you can achieve a lot, professionally, personally and to move the organization forward. This will require you a lot of political and personal maneuvering

If you follow your line management advice or try to identify the correct way of working you get no-where and you will be put to low priority projects, because there is no way organization supports anything urgent or accelerated - which key programs require constantly. If you are from day 1 in "wrong group" you have no chance to shine, but you will most certainly have a stable unfulfilling role. No coaching, unclear way of working while everyone is requesting some made up processes which is hardly documented anywhere. You cannot choose your own people despite having budget, lot of politics.
