Pros

The job is quite well-paid to the sector and there are other benefits like coffee break at 11am and 2 hours lunch break. The lunch is paid by the company.

Kontras

Too much office politics. This is the worse part of the job. The first month after joining the department, I faced the change of my department head. After that, it followed a lot of office politics between the workers in order to get the vacant position. The working environment was completely unpleasant. Unfair promotion system. After more than 2 years working in the department I realized that male and local workers got promoted faster than female or foreign workers. You do not learn anything new from your work. Senior workers are not required to train junior workers so junior workers are often asked to do very mechanic and little rewarding tasks. Very hierarchical. Junior workers are expected to not express their opinions against more senior workers or management. Human Resources department is badly managed. There have been a lot of occasions where I asked for help to the HR department but they refused to help due to lack of resources. When I quitted, the company still owned me 200€, which I reclaimed several times afterwards but never got paid. Rigid structure Asking for collaboration to other departments is especially difficult if you are not in a senior position.

Pros

BBVA as a whole, it has a very friendly work environment and has a unique culture unlike any other bank in midtown

Kontras

That being said, any team or department that lefts unchecked can end up becoming toxic which happened at my team. There was a VP/ED who was mistreating me to a point where it was a violation of the code of conduct and was impacting my overall internship experience and my chances at a full time job because this ed/vp was allowed to mistreat based on personal biases against me. I reported it to our manager during our midterm meeting to which I phrased it as “he was in violation of the code of conduct and has been abusive”. Instead he yelled at me during the meeting because he didn’t want to lose someone who downgraded from a BB that he got for cheap. He said in the end of the meeting he would talk with the Ed/vp but a month later he pulled me into a room with HR and said today was the last day of my internship. Very unprofessional as he clearly sided with the toxic Ed/vp and booted me out because he didn’t want to lose the Ed/vp even if he was in violation of the code of conduct. Horrible experince and everyone in my team failed to uphold to professional decency. As long as everyone in that team is still there would not recommend this team at BBVA unless something structurally changes.
