As an application engineer, you are given a lot of power to push the your problem skills and the tools needed to succeed. The flexibility you have is incredible; you get assigned with your own project with a specific client and you get to manage the project all the way through. It is incredibly satisfying to see your work and be proud to know that you are a lot time entirely responsible for the success of a project.

The best reason is also its downside. If you are not the self-starter type, then working there could feel like you don't get enough direction nor training. It is definitely a trial by fire position. Since each project is a custom order, you basically have to rely on your own problem solving skills; there are many times when you have to think outside the box to solve the issues. In addition, since most of the application engineers travel around the country, rarely do you get to see your coworkers in the office. Lastly, the pay rate could be better, typically it has been lower than market rate.
