Pros

- High call volume in urban areas forces you to become a good EMT (if you are self-motivated). - Good employees are pretty much left alone in the field (no micro managing, for the most part).

Kontras

- High call volume in urban areas forces you to become a lazy EMT (if you are not self-motivated). - Good employees are pretty much left alone in the field (this company does a poor job of acknowledging or supporting good performance/good employees). - Organizational culture is very ageist towards older employees and/or applicants over 40 and does not value experience, professionalism or maturity among employees (would rather hire or promote young, inexperienced, immature employees - all in the name of saving money). - Culture is dominated by young, inexperienced, immature employees (#1 most prevalent problem supervisors/management have to deal with - caused by previous point). - Each operations region of the company is run as a completely separate company, even withing the same state (job transfers to other cities/states/regions are not allowed/recognized). - AMR has changed ownership 3 times in the last 10 years (Laidlaw Transportation, then EMSC, then Envision Healthcare), each time involving wholesale changes in management, staffing and corporate philosophy.

Pros

There’s a good workforce here with employees who are well united on issues a strong sense that the company is actually pushing toward a positive future in terms of operations. Ambulance fleet seems to be getting good upgrades and call volume (in most areas) is manageable. There is also a good amount of OT available with bonuses/incentives available. Matching 401k is nice and health benefits are very reasonable.

Kontras

For being such a large operation, the pay rate seems to be lacking as of right now. Most employees with adult responsibilities are having to rely heavily on overtime/incentives just to have a semi-comfortable lifestyle outside of work. Uniforms definitely need improvements and training for new EMTs seems a bit lackluster. The morale can be low at times also due to the company being write-up happy (for lack of a better term). Lack of 24 hour units and proper posting locations makes for a somewhat harsh work day as well.
