For us, Health and Safety in the workplace is about showing care and attention for each other’s wellbeing every day. When everyone’s at their best, we’re a far better company. In 2024, all 8 of our manufacturing buildings in Memphis celebrated a year or more without a Recordable Incident (i.e. needing more than first aid). One building even achieved their 10 year milestone!
Inspiring the next generation of innovators on our doorstep… Our Penang team recently welcomed local primary schools to our facility for a STEM open day. Through games, factory tours and hands-on activities, like building a hydraulic lift, our young guests learned all about the exciting world of STEM and how it’s shaping the future.
Teams who run together, have fun together! 👏 Kudos to our Dubai team who completed the Dubai Run 2024 over the weekend. Spurred on by the Smith+Nephew Dubai Life Council, the team used the opportunity to celebrate fitness, resilience and teamwork.
Meet Francis, Felix, Joseph and Samwel – four surgeons from Tanzania who landed in the UK this week to start a jam-packed fortnight of training. Kicking off with a soft tissue course at our London Academy, the surgeons will tour the UK, visiting clinics to enhance their skills and witness the latest techniques. Partnering with the British Orthopaedic Association and the St Roch Group, we are pleased to be able to support this initiative, enhancing access to medical education and helping our guests to take the limits off living for their patients.
Throughout October, our CARE Employee Inclusion Group led a series of activities focused on wellbeing. The activities worldwide aimed to breakdown stigma surrounding mental health and remind our teams that sharing is caring. From promoting mindfulness with painting and yoga sessions, to inspiring webinars in which mental health speakers Kevin Hines and Clive Branson shared their stories of overcoming adversity. The CARE Employee Inclusion Group is made up of colleagues who are passionate about the importance of health and wellbeing, supporting our people to flourish at work and seek support when they need it.
📣 Exciting news! 📣 Smith+Nephew Italy has received the National Certification of Gender Equality (UNI/PdR 125:2022), highlighting our continued commitment to improving inclusivity, diversity and equity within our organisation.
Think pink for Breast Cancer! It’s not just our customers who we want to enjoy Life Unlimited. We host initiatives across the globe that give our colleagues the chance to learn more about taking care of their own health and wellbeing. To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, our teams worldwide have dug out their fuschia outfits and taken part in a range of activities, including in-office medical check-ups and talks from doctors on cancer prevention.
Building a better world, brick by brick… 🏠 With 8 hours of paid volunteering leave, our teams have the chance to make a difference in the communities where they live and work. Supporting Habitat For Humanity, a charity that constructs affordable homes to tackle housing poverty, a team of eager builders from our Memphis site donned their hard hats in the sunshine. They installed boards and windows to the structures and removed debris from the site, helping to make the new homeowner’s dream come true. Our volunteer construction crew are members of our UNITY Employee Inclusion Group, which works to improve cultural awareness and understanding across our workforce.
An exceptional award for an exceptional team. We’re thrilled that Smith+Nephew has received a Gallup Exceptional Workplace Award for 2024. Gallup perform rigorous analysis of company cultures across the globe to recognize the best of the best in employee engagement. We’ll continue driving new initiatives to support wellbeing and ensuring all employees can be themselves at work.
Function is paramount in medical devices, but that doesn’t mean we can’t deliver it with style. We had a fantastic evening celebrating RENASYS EDGE winning the Red Dot Award for Design Concept 2024 in the Medical Devices and Technology Category. The Red Dot awards commend new innovations and groundbreaking designs. EDGE’s patient-centric concept was recognized for its combination of a discreet, comfortable design, enabling patients to continue with their daily lives while receiving prescribed negative pressure wound therapy. Congratulations to all the winners!
