Excellent benefits, salary and bonus. Proactive and aggressive work environment. Opportunities to learn and grow. The people are young, fun and career oriented.

Limited upward mobility. Small company with management shares held by a very small and exclusive group. You literally almost have to fight in order to get an ownership position. The company has lost talent due to this nepotism.

Worked on a few interesting projects and learned more about the hedge fund industry. Hours were also good, 9-5, and projects were not pressured or with strict deadlines.

Pay was very low for the position ($10). Other asset management or investment research positions with similar responsibilities offer much higher salaries/perks for their interns. Another offer I had for the summer was 2.5x higher, but I had already accepted and didn't want to reneg. Part of it is that the intern pay is the same regardless of position. Permal has a good name in the AM world so it is surprising that the pay is so low. Also, Permal does not hire undergraduates for their investment or asset management team so interns are kind of left on their own to find full-time employment. Portfolio Managers are accessible and helpful with projects, but helps to be as proactive as possible and make the most of all projects. There are also luncheons for all the interns every few weeks, which was nice. I guess that since interns aren't there to be hired there's no need to give them the full treatment [training week in Florida, free stuff, large salary like the accounting or banking firms] although it would've been nice.. :)
