Pros

Benefits slightly above average. Depending on the group, working from home and flexible hours are a common thing. Regulated industry makes it interesting.

Kontras

Toxic culture, everyone wants to leave and/or is miserable. Good ole boys club rules apply, reduced opportunities minorities. Females systematically make less across the company. Management are bosses, not leaders. Most rule on hierarchy and authority instead of leadership. Leaders will push their subordinates under the hus when needed and take all the credit. Promotions and raises 100% based on relations; good work will get you nowhere, knowing the right people will sky-rocket you to the top, crossing the wrong people will get you fired or demoted. Forced bell curve in yearly reviews, so again, its all on how chumy you are with your managers. Absolutely no career path, no lead positions between analyst role and manager role. Re-orgs are constant, leading to demotions or job loses yearly for the last 2-3 years. LOTS of inexperience UK ex-pats in top management positions that can do no wrong, don't need to do anything but get to call the shots. Rules don't apply equally, you'd almost think there's a cast system in place. Office politics and preferential treatment is such a standard that you will want to run out screaming after your first week since to get your work done, you have to not only do the actual work but collaborating with others without ruffling anyones feathers. Since everyone wants to leave finance, there are many stories of internal moves blocked by finance managers to force their employees to stay within their teams.

Pros

I cannot say enough about how great a company National Grid is. I’ve been here for over four years, and there is truly a culture where employees are encouraged to share their voices. The company regularly conducts surveys to understand how employees are feeling, what they need, and what matters to them... and then transparently shares the results with everyone. I have never experienced this level of openness with any other employer, and I know that none of my friends or family have had similar opportunities. It says a lot that so many employees want their family members to work here as well. Working at National Grid is more than just a job, it’s a lifestyle, and there is a strong sense of pride in being part of the organization. As a woman, I am proud to be part of this “brotherhood” and have never felt that this is a male‑dominated space. There are many opportunities across the company, from field operations to management, depending on your interests. Compensation is competitive and rewards both experience and performance. Remote and hybrid work are sometimes an option, which to me shows a level of trust and respect for employees. I only wish I had joined earlier in my career.

Kontras

I do wish there were more opportunities available in Western New York. Many roles seem to be concentrated in Central New York, Eastern New York, or downstate, and it would be great to see additional positions (for others to join the company) closer to home in WNY.
