Pros

- The other fellows were passionate and great to work with - The student leaders are awesome – they keep this movement going - Supported a great cause: preventing hunger and food waste

Kontras

- The salary is not enough to live on in DC. Using low-paid fellowships and unpaid internships is exploitative. - The Executive Director created a very toxic work environment. She is disorganized, barely present and does not listen to or support her staff. - Fellows are expected to do work that they have little experience in without being given support or training opportunities. Managers do not know what they are doing and cannot teach the fellows what they do not know. - The Executive Director does not handle disputes in a professional manner. She is more likely to discuss issues behind an employee's back than confront a problem diplomatically and head-on. - No opportunities for upward growth

Pros

I'm about to celebrate my sixth work anniversary at FRN, and I wanted to write a review to highlight the top three things I value about my job and this nonprofit: 1. Growth opportunities - In my time at FRN, I have been promoted twice and now serve as a Program Director. At each stage of my growth, I experienced the right balance of autonomy and collaboration over decision-making and program implementation to achieve programmatic goals. I really value FRN's commitment to career development for staff members. 2. Positive workplace culture - As this organization has grown and professionalized, we have collectively made changes to foster a workplace culture that puts people at the forefront. Our leadership and development teams have ensured that staff wages are increased to compete with the DC market, that FRN can offer healthcare to employees, and that staff can contribute to a retirement plan. Additionally, everyone on the team takes time and care to get to know one another and to foster an encouraging, fun, and collaborative environment for all. Everyone brings a unique approach and perspective to the work we do. I am grateful to collaborate with such a talented and dedicated group of people every day. 3. Mission and approach - FRN staff are committed to advancing our mission strategically. I have witnessed the advancements in the intentionality behind our programs and growth, specifically to expand food donation efforts in communities that are underserved. I love the work I'm able to achieve every day to simultaneously combat food insecurity and climate change.

Kontras

We do not have an employer match for retirement contributions, which I would love to see in the future.
